What does it mean to have faith?
There is a story of a man that I love who exercised great faith. The was a man who for many years did his best to serve the Lord. For many years he, and his wife tried and tried to have children, and he was promised to have posterity that would be as numerous as the sands of the sea. Finally after many years they had a son. After many years our Heavenly Father asked this man to offer up his son as a sacrifice. This man had such great faith that he willingly obeyed knowing that God would provide him with a posterity. So he was obedient and went to the mountain and was about to offer up his son, when he was about to do so and Angel of the Lord appeared and stopped him.
So how does this story relate to the first question?
Abraham was a prophet who know and most importantly put his trust in God and in his promises! In Doctrine & Covenants 82:10 it says, "I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise." Abraham knew and understood this, and know that somehow the Lord would provide the way for him to have a Family. So he simply trusted in God that He would keep His promise if "he" Abraham would keep Gods Commandments.
Likewise with us, often times we don't and maybe never will understand why God asked us to do certain things. But if we have faith and we know its from God and we do what he asks we will know that it is of God and be Blessed. In Ether 12:6 we learn "concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith." When we act in faith God gives us a witness of what we do is right, and when we know it is right our faith builds and we are lead to do more good. We many not know everything but if we trust in God he will make all things work together for our good.
